Preparations for a review of building regulations post-Grenfell have begun, according to Newsnight.
In the news
BBC Newsnight claimed last night that officials at the Department for Communities and Local Government have been shocked by how the regulations have been interpreted as results from cladding tests come in.
Elsewhere, the BBC carries an interesting feature this morning focusing on a former firefighter who lives in a tower block owned by Trafford Housing Trust. He decided to investigate the building’s fire safety after the Grenfell disaster and was concerned by what he found.
The Mirror is reporting that 159 social housing flats are empty in Kensington and Chelsea, enough to house the 158 families affected by the Grenfell Tower fire.
And The Guardian carries an opinion piece calling for the public inquiry into the disaster to be widened in order to take in the role of developers and regeneration in social housing.
On a lighter note, The Guardian has also run a story about a development in Manchester which is trying to stop foreign investors buying up units ahead of locals, while The Telegraph has a feature about an innovative scheme in Amsterdam which is vying to help solve the city’s housing crisis.
On social media
Twitter last night was awash with comments on Channel 4’s programme Who Wants My Council House? The show was about people inviting potential buyers into their council homes for viewings, but for many it was an illuminating glimpse into our society’s approach to social housing.
