The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said that 10 fire engines were called to reports of a fire on a balcony at a block of flats in Darfield Way, just half a mile from Grenfell Tower in west London.

The block is 22-storey Markland House on the Silchester Estate, also owned by Kensington and Chelsea Council.

The LFB said that a balcony on the 12th floor was alight but there have been no reports of any injuries.

The LFB has taken 27 emergency calls about the fire, with the first at 11.39am.

It said the fire was under control by 12.55pm but crews will remain on scene this afternoon.

Via Twitter, Kensington and Chelsea Council said: “We’ve opened up a community hall in Frinstead house with supplies such as water and nappies for residents.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A fire risk assessment for Markland House carried out in February 2018 concluding the risk of a fire in the block was ’medium’, with a fire likely to pose threat of ’moderate harm’ to life safety.
