£76m a year announced for vulnerable people’s housing #ukhousing

There will be £76m a year available over the next three years to support construction of homes designed for people with disabilities, mental health issues or for older people who need extra support.

The fund is administered outside London by Homes England - which will receive £125m - and by the mayor of London in the capital, which will take the remaining £103m.

Allowing rolling bids is intended to help landlords and developers get schemes off the ground more rapidly.

Ms Dinenage said: “We want the fund to be used to its maximum potential so more homes can be created, more quickly, ensuring that thousands of people are supported to live independently in their own homes, benefitting both them and their carers.”

The fund was launched in 2012 and two earlier bidding rounds have seen 3,300 homes built.

Gordon More, executive director of Homes England, said: “We urge all specialist housing providers to consider how they can access this funding to provide new homes for vulnerable people.”

Michael Voges, executive director of Association of Retirement Community Operators, said: “The past week has been very encouraging for our sector – we are hoping that this signals the start of a new understanding in government of the huge benefits that retirement communities can deliver.

“This investment could thousands of new retirement community units being delivered for older people with more moderate means, who might not otherwise have been able to benefit from world leading housing and care. This will benefit the health and social care systems and free up larger homes.

“Our sector is poised and ready to deliver thousands more units of retirement community housing for older people.”
