Just under 9,000 affordable homes were started under Greater London Authority programmes in the first year of Sadiq Khan’s tenure as mayor.
The figure of 8,935 starts between April last year and the end of March is a rise from 7,467 the year before but well below the recent peak of 16,351 in 2010/11.
All the starts were under programmes launched under the previous mayor Boris Johnson, with Mr Khan’s programme only signed off by the Treasury in November.
More than 80% of the starts were under the Affordable Homes Programme 2015/18, with the remainder spread across programmes including the Housing Zones schemes and the London Housing Bank.
Just over half (51%) of the properties were for affordable rent with the remainder for shared ownership.
The figures show a low level of completions at 4,934, slightly up on the 4,881 last year but significantly down on the 17,875 in 2014/15.
This is due to the shift between programmes which sees a high level of completions in the final year of funding rounds.
The 2014/15 financial year marked the final year of the Affordable Homes Programme 2011/15 when many of the homes funded under the programme were finished.
