Gavin Barwell has been named the prime minister’s chief of staff after losing his marginal seat in last week’s general election.
The former housing minister, who had overseen a shift in housing policy in his 12 months in the role, was announced into the high powered role at Number 10 over the weekend.
As chief of staff, Mr Barwell replaces Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill - Theresa May’s previous advisors - who resigned over the weekend.
In a statement, Ms May said: “He will bring considerable experience of the party to the post. As I said yesterday, I want to reflect on the election and why it did not deliver the result I hoped for. Gavin will have an important role to play in that. I look forward to working with him.”
He will have a key role in advising Ms May on policy and strategy.
It came during a post-election reshuffle which saw communities secretary Sajid Javid remain at the helm of the Department for Communities and Local Government, despite being widely tipped to move on.
Damian Green, the work and pensions secretary, has been named first secretary of state – effective deputy prime minister – with David Gauke replacing him at the Department for Work and Pensions.
Mr Gauke has consistently voted in favour of policies such as Pay to Stay, ending lifetime tenancies and the Bedroom Tax.
The government is yet to appoint a new housing minister.
