The SFHA’s 2014 annual conference, Leading Change, focuses on the strong leadership required to guide the sector through current challenges, such as the effects of welfare reforms. The body said today that it is crucial to invest in apprentices now to be the future leaders.

The conference will feature a challenge for 19 apprentices from across Scotland who they will present their ideas tomorrow and delegates will vote to decide who wins the challenge. The winning team will have to demonstrate their skills in leadership, team working, budgeting and communication as well as present the best overall solution.

Nicola Sturgeon, deputy first minister, who is giving an address at the conference today, said: ‘The apprentice challenge is a fantastic showcase for young apprentices. By investing in them now we are investing in an innovative and exciting industry in the future.’

Mary Taylor, chief executive of the SFHA, said: ‘The challenge is an excellent way for the apprentices to further develop their learning and for our sector to showcase the young talent that we have and inspire others to follow.’

She added: ‘It is vital that we attract and shape young people now to become innovative leaders who will improve the social housing sector and keep it fresh and moving forward.’

The SFHA conference takes place in Glasgow today and Friday.

Inside Housing’s Homes Work campaign has led to supporters pledging 1,624 apprenticeships. This includes 1,195 placements pledged by housing associations and 429 by arm’s-length management organisations.
