The chief executive of Newcastle-based housing association Byker Community Trust (BCT) has announced that she is set to retire after a 40-year career in the housing sector.
Jill Haley has announced that she will be taking an early retirement after nine years as the CEO at BCT.
She began the role in March 2012, a few months before Newcastle City Council transferred the Grade II listed Byker Estate to the association.
Her decision to retire comes just over a month after BCT completed the transfer of its homes to 30,000-home landlord Karbon Homes. The association owns stock across the North East of England and Yorkshire.
Ms Haley began her career in 1981 in the housing department at Sunderland Council at the age of 16. She graduated with a degree in housing from Northumbria University in 1998 and has been recognised across her career, including being awarded with a fellowship at the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH).
She has also served as the chair of CIH North East Regional Board between 2013 and 2017.
Ms Haley joined from large Sunderland housing association Gentoo, where she spent 12 years in a number of roles, including head of sales and marketing.
Ms Haley said: “I look back with great pride because of what has been achieved for the residents of Byker and the community. It’s been quite a journey with a myriad of complex challenges along the way. I can say hand on heart that I have stayed true to the vision which I set out in my interview, when I secured the role of chief executive.”
“I look forward to watching Byker’s continued journey in the safe hands of Karbon Homes and to the next chapter in my professional life.”
