House builders are calling for urgent measures to increase housing supply to be included in next week’s Budget.

The Home Builder’s Federation is calling for a replacement for the homebuy direct shared equity scheme, tax incentives to assist first-time buyers, and work with lenders and house builders to address the lack of mortgage availability.

It also wants to see more public sector land released for development.

Stewart Baseley, executive chairman of HBF, said: ‘This is a critical budget for the government if it is serious about its commitment to increase housing supply and boost the economy.

‘House building can be a crucial driver in creating jobs and investment. By tackling the record low levels of construction and our current housing crisis we could create 200,000 jobs a year.’

In a Westminster Hall debate this week, Conservative MP George Hollingbery blamed the lack of building on opposition from local people.

‘Many obstacles are set in the way of local councillors, and there is often great hostility,’ he said.

‘The inclusion of houses in local plans and local development framework core strategies was almost always achieved in the teeth of fierce resistance from local people. A great many houses were planned but never built, and that is a key issue, which we need to confront.’
