CIH research launched on housing allocations #ukhousing

The ‘Rethinking Allocations’ project is calling on housing associations and councils to share their experiences of how they are allocating housing and why, in a bid to improve the situation.

Terrie Alafat, chief executive at the CIH, said the study would be specifically looking at housing providers’ allocation policies, how these are influenced by government policy and how this is impacting who has access to social rented housing.

She said: “By understanding better what is happening now, and the reasons behind that, we’re aiming to open a debate about how things could be improved – and how we can get to a place where social housing is allocated in a way that allows it to play a central role in balanced, vibrant communities.”

Those working in sector will be able to contribute to the online survey from today, with the survey closing on 23 November.

The work follows on from the CIH’s ‘Rethinking Social Housing’ project, which saw more than 3,000 people submit views on the future of social housing.

The report found that the shortage of genuinely affordable housing for rent means that the allocation of homes remains necessary, and highlighted issues with how the sector supports people on very low incomes.
