The UK’s largest housing association has lodged plans for a £22m regeneration of a 1960s housing estate in Plymouth.
Clarion Housing Group has submitted proposals for Barne Barton Estate to Plymouth City Council, which include bulldozing the entire plot and building 204 new homes.
The estate is reportedly known locally as the ‘forgotten island’ due its deprived image. It was once the UK’s largest naval estate and was built by the Ministry of Defence in the 1960s.
Clarion said the plans include changing the layout of the estate, improving views and creating “opportunities for homeownership and enhance the community spaces”.
Current tenants wanting to remain on the estate will be rehoused, the group said.
Clarion conduced consultation events with residents and ran a regeneration steering group.
Alexandra Willey, head of regeneration at Clarion, said a £450,000 grant from the government’s estates regeneration fund was “instrumental” in helping Clarion develop its plans.
Kayleigh Knight, resident and member of the regeneration steering group on the Barne Barton Estate, added: “We have been actively involved with Clarion in helping shape the proposals for the future of Barne Barton and making sure that the things that really mattered to residents were included.”
Master planning has been undertaken by Exeter-based Clifton Emery Design, while architects on the scheme are R H Partnership.
The Barne Barton scheme is part of Clarion’s £2.6bn programme to regenerate its existing estates and follows planning approval granted in March to regenerate three of its estates in the London Borough of Merton.
Clarion is aiming to build 50,000 new homes over the next 10 years as part of a £13bn investment.
