The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating, along with Hampshire Police.

Clarion Housing Group, which owns and manages around 125,000 homes, is the developer of the site, with Brymor Group the main contractor.

Hampshire Constabulary said it was called at 9.46am on Monday after a 30-year-old man was found injured on the construction site in Wiltshire Crescent, Basingstoke.

A spokesperson for the force added: “He was taken to hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. His family have been informed and are being supported.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and we will assist the Health and Safety Executive’s enquiries. A file shall also be prepared for the coroner.”

The man has been named locally as father-of-one Scott Grimes.

A fundraising page set up in his honour has received nearly £30,000 in donations, smashing its £5,000 target.

A spokesperson for the HSE said: “We are currently looking into this incident with Hampshire Police who are leading on the investigation.

“A HSE inspector has attended the site and has been working with them to ensure any ongoing risk is controlled.”

A spokesperson for Clarion said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of a man employed by a contractor on the Wiltshire Crescent site, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”

A spokesperson for Brymor said: “Sadly an operative was found unresponsive at our Wiltshire Crescent site.

“Despite first aid being administered by our team and the emergency health professionals, they were unable to resuscitate him.

“The matter is being investigated by the relevant authorities and the company continues to assist them with their inquiries. The HSE has confirmed that the site can remain open.

“The thoughts of everyone at Brymor remain with his family and friends at this time.”
