Ms Allen, who was MP for South Cambridgeshire from 2015 to 2019, will take on the role at CHS Group.

She rose to prominence after resigning from the Conservative Party in 2019 to join an anti-Brexit group of politicians known as the The Independent Group. She was appointed interim leader of the party, which later became Change UK.

Ms Allen then left to sit as an independent MP, before joining the Liberal Democrats in October 2019.

However, she decided not to stand for re-election at the general election in December 2019 and said that Brexit had “broken our politics”.

At CHS, Ms Allen will take over from Nicola Scrivings who is stepping down after eight years as chair of the organisation.

Founded in 1927, CHS operates around 2,800 low-cost rented and shared ownership homes across Cambridgeshire, serving 7,000 residents. It also runs residential and domiciliary care for older people and nurseries.

Ms Allen, who is also an advocacy advisor to the RSPCA, said: “When I decided to stand down from being the MP for South Cambridgeshire, I knew it would be important for me to continue contributing to my local community.

“I believe passionately that those of us fortunate enough to be in a position to help, must do what we can to support people on lower incomes and the more vulnerable members of our society.”

In its last reported full-year to the end of March 2020, CHP reported a group surplus of £4.6m off a turnover of £38.3m. It has a G1/V2 rating from the English regulator.

Nigel Howlett, chief executive of CHS, said: “We look forward to being guided by Heidi and her unique expertise through the next stages of our organisation’s journey.”
