Habinteg Housing Association has appointed Nick Apetroaie, former deputy CEO of Optivo, as its new chief executive #UKhousing

The accessible homes specialist has brought in Mr Apetroaie to lead the 3,300-home landlord after Sheron Carter stepped down from the role in November. Ms Carter spent three years at the helm of the association.

Mr Apetroaie has held a number of senior roles across the social housing sector, including half a year as deputy chief executive at large London housing association Optivo. He was a key part of the merger between Amicus Horizon and Viridian, which created Optivo, having spent two years as Viridian’s CEO.

He joins Habinteg after three years at the Royal National Institute of Blind People as executive director for care, education and safeguarding.

In November, Habinteg joined with a number of other housing associations to call on government to change the law and building regulations around the accessibility of housing. The joint submission called for a regulatory baseline that would see all new-build homes require suitable provision for accessibility for all tenants.

The housing association also recently took on two new development projects to build several new accessible homes. It is currently in the process of developing 94 accessible homes across the London Borough of Hounslow and is redeveloping a former care home in Walsall into a block of 18 accessible flats.

Mr Apetroaie said of his appointment: “I’m happy to be joining an exemplary housing provider, which puts the customer at the centre of its services while leading an ambitious development programme. It’s exciting to be taking on a role championing societal change by ensuring that everyone has a right to an accessible and adaptable home in an inclusive neighbourhood.

“My aim is to work with colleagues to build an organisation that both staff and tenants are proud to be part of – an organisation that invests in its staff and supports them to deliver great outcomes for customers.”

Manny Lewis, chair of Habinteg, said: “Nick will bring a wealth of relevant knowledge and experience to Habinteg. He is keen to promote a culture that challenges out-of-date perceptions and stigma around disability and will build on our track record of delivery and innovation.”

Amid the housing crisis and with increasing demands on local authorities, developers and housing associations to deliver more homes, the Inside Housing and Homes England Development Summit brings together the public and private sector to collaborate towards the effective delivery of homes across England.

This is not a conference. It is a business meeting of decision-makers on delivery and how to build more quality homes.
