Contract manager, Look Ahead

What does your job involve?

I manage an accommodation-based service for people with mental health needs in east London.

How did you get into housing?

I joined Look Ahead through their apprenticeship scheme in 2012. I wasn’t your typical apprentice – I was 26 and had been working in a pub. I had wanted to be a flight attendant. I knew I wanted to build a career and to do that I needed to invest in training, which isn’t easy when you’re a single parent. A friend of mine had started an apprenticeship and recommended it to me.

What would you change about the sector?

We need better integration of housing, health and social care. I would also like the role of frontline staff who support and empower vulnerable people to be recognised more.

How can we get more apprentices into the sector?

People need a better understanding of what apprenticeships involve. I thought there would be a lot more time in the classroom but I was surprised to find that it was really hands-on.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Knowing that every day, I make a positive difference.

I feel really lucky that I have the opportunity to continuously learn and develop my skills.

And the most challenging?

Managing my own expectations about how much I can do!

What is your dream job?

I’d love to be a philanthropist and surrounded by kids! But I’m lucky that I really enjoy what I do.

What does a good day look like?

Every day is different, but it’s particularly rewarding when we achieve positive customer outcomes and are able to help those experiencing discrimination or setbacks due to their mental health or vulnerability.

How about a bad one?

When I don’t have coffee before 10am. Grrrr…

What’s the first thing you’d do if you became prime minister?

I’d put supporting those in our society who are most in need at the top of the agenda. I’d also introduce an extra day at the weekend, in between Saturday and Sunday!

What’s the most private thing you’d be willing to admit to colleagues?

That I like laying still like a vegetable when I’m not at work! And I enjoy looking at the stars with my boy.
