Mr Mercer, who has more than 40 years’ experience in social housing, is expected to take his planned absence from 13 August.

Over the same period Dean Tufts, executive director of finance and strategy, will take on all financial responsibilities for the 38,000-home landlord.

Mr Mercer will continue to lead the group through to August and will support a planned transition and handover to Ms Waterhouse, overseen by the group’s chair Ian Cox.

A2Dominion said it expects Mr Mercer’s absence to last approximately three months.

Mr Cox said: “We are swiftly progressing arrangements for a smooth transition and handover to Anne for this interim period and wish Darrell a very speedy recovery.”

The housing association last month announced plans to deliver 1,200 new homes a year, with 40% of these for private sale.
