Gentoo poaches Home Group executive as it eyes 900-home pipeline #ukhousing

Joanne Gordon, who spent eight years as head of strategic development at Newcastle-based Home Group, has joined 28,000-home Gentoo in the newly-created role of development director.

She is charged with delivering the group’s £117m plan for 900 affordable homes for rent in Sunderland by 2024, through a mixture of new build and existing properties.

Gentoo has endured a turbulent recent history, culminating in a damning regulatory judgement in October 2017 concerning pay-offs to departing executives that downgraded it to non-compliant with the Homes and Communities Agency’s basic governance standards.

Gentoo said its new plan for homes will be subsidised by the £4m surplus generated by its property development arm Gentoo Homes.

The group announced in May a £417m investment plan to improve its existing portfolio, as well as deliver new affordable rented properties.

Ms Gordon said: "I’m grateful to have been given the task of delivering the group’s new affordable homes plan and am really looking forward to making a difference to housing supply in Sunderland.”

Nigel Wilson, group chief executive officer at Gentoo, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Joanne to the team and look forward to working together to address the shortage of affordable rented homes in Sunderland.”

Mr Wilson joined the group in January, taking over from interim CEO David Jepson.
