Up to 45,000 homes to be delivered as government allocates £900m for infrastructure spending #UKhousing

Over 300 projects in England have been allocated a share of the government’s Getting Building Fund #UKhousing

Successful projects that will receive a share of the £900m fund include the National Brownfield Land Institute, a project aiming to create a leader in sustainable construction, and a new high-speed rail station in Thanet, Kent.

The funding was originally announced by Boris Johnson in June as part of a “new deal” to help the UK’s economy recover from the impact of coronavirus.

All projects have been selected by Local Enterprise Partnerships and mayoral combined authorities in each area and endorsed by housing secretary Robert Jenrick.

The government has also today announced a further £8m for its £400m Brownfield Land Fund aimed at speeding up the delivery of new homes on brownfield sites.

In June, £360m from the fund was allocated to to the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region, Sheffield City Region and North of Tyne and Tees Valley, with combined authorities now being invited to submit bids for the remaining £40m.

Mr Jenrick said: “As we get Britain building, we are also laying the foundations for a green economic recovery by investing in vital infrastructure for local communities, creating jobs and building environmentally friendly homes with a huge £1.3bn investment announced today.

“This government is determined to level up all parts of the country and this funding will not only give a much needed boost to our economic recovery, it will help build the good-quality, affordable homes the country needs.”

The funding comes ahead of a major overhaul of the planning system, the details of which are expected to be announced this week

Over the weekend Mr Jenrick wrote in a column in The Sunday Telegraph that homes, offices, schools, shops and offices will be granted automatic planning approval in areas designated for growth.
