House destroyed and residents evacuated as fire rips through London block #ukhousing

Ten engines and 70 firefighters were called to tackle the fire that started last night in Wood Green #ukhousing

A total of 10 engines and 70 firefighters were called to tackle the fire that started just before 10pm in the Firs House block in Acacia Road, Wood Green. Three people were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.

The development is owned by the council and managed by Homes for Haringey, the authority’s ALMO.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called at 9.58pm last night, with crews from Tottenham, Hornsey, Edmonton, Holloway, Stoke Newington, and Southgate fighting the flames until it was brought under control at midnight.

The council set up a rest centre overnight for those residents that were impacted by the fire and are now working to find alternative accommodation for those who cannot return

One maisonette spread over the second and third floor was destroyed by the fire and part of the roof was damaged, too.

The LFB said they are currently investigating what started the fire.

Joseph Ejiofor, leader of Haringey Council, said: “This is devastating for the families affected by the fire – we are so grateful to the firefighters who battled this blaze and ensured that everyone was able to get out safely.

“The council set up a rest centre overnight and we and Homes for Haringey are working with affected residents to find alternative accommodation and offer any support we can. We are very grateful for the offers of support from the local community.”

Update: at 11.20am, 30/01/2020 This article was updated with confirmation that the building was managed by Homes for Haringey and a statement from Joseph Eljofor.
