Places for People (PfP) has announced a national framework agreement with developer Countryside to deliver 10,000 mixed-tenure homes over a 10-year period.
PfP said Countryside “continues to see attractive opportunities for growth to deliver a mix of private for sale, private rented sector and affordable homes” and that the new framework will allow the house builder to develop large sites more quickly.
One of the country’s largest landlords owning around 70,000 homes and managing many more, PfP built 1,466 new affordable homes in the year to 31 March 2020.
David Cowans, group chief executive of PfP, said: “For our future housing market to be successful, we need to provide more housing choice, improve quality and increase efficiency.
“Working with Countryside, a business that shares our commitment to creating well designed, sustainable communities, will help us deliver quality homes that provide choice and meet people’s needs and aspirations.”
Iain McPherson, group chief executive of Countryside, said: “Our business has a proven track record and, together with our clear strategy for growth, we look forward to continuing to work with our partners as we focus on the delivery of high quality and sustainable mixed-tenure communities.”
The announcement comes during a turbulent period for Countryside, after its third-largest shareholder, US hedge fund Browning West, wrote a letter last week demanding the replacement of its current chair David Howell.
In response Countryside wrote a letter to the California-based firm, which holds a 9.4% stake in the company, in which it said: “We regret that you chose to launch a public campaign against Countryside and its board rather than continue to engage with us in a constructive private dialogue.”
