Housing association appoints former Peabody chief executive to board #ukhousing

Orbit, which owns around 42,000 homes and was the UK’s biggest builder of affordable housing for 2017/18, has hired Stephen Howlett as a board member.

Mr Howlett stepped down as boss of the famous London housing association Peabody last year following its 55,000-home merger with Family Mosaic.

He had held the role for 13 years and has more than 40 years’ experience working in the sector.

At this year’s New Year’s Honours list he was awarded a CBE for services to housing and was made a deputy lieutenant for Greater London in 2017.

He is also chair of London South East Colleges, a member of Transport for London’s commercial development advisory group and an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Tessa Blackstone, chair of Orbit, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Stephen to our board.

“His impressive career history, which spans 40 years, is testament to his dedication to housing with a social purpose and we look forward to benefiting from his extensive experience and knowledge at our future board meetings.”

Mr Howlett said: “After Peabody I took a little time out, but was extremely keen to continue using my housing sector experience in other roles.

“Orbit really appealed to me because it has a wider geographical remit than I have been used to and I like the fact that it has a robust building programme working alongside its strong social purpose.”

Orbit has stock across the Midlands, East of England and South East and employs around 1,200 staff.

It delivered more than 2,000 new homes over the last year, including 1,210 for social or affordable rent.
