Housing association in the North of England appoints new chair #UKHousing

North of England housing association Castles and Coasts has made board member Chris Lewis its chair #UKHousing

Chris Lewis is to replace Fiona Moore as chair of the board of Castles and Coasts #UKHousing

Mr Lewis will replace Fiona Moore, who is retiring after nine years on the board of the 7,000-home landlord based in the North of England.

The current chair of staffing and governance on the board, he will officially take over as chair in September.

Ms Moore leaves after assisting with the successful merger of Two Castles and Derwent and Solway housing associations that created Castles and Coasts in 2017. She became chair of the new organisation, which owns homes across Cumbria and the North East, in October of that year.

In 2018, the newly formed association secured a governance upgrade from England’s Regulator of Social Housing, with Castles and Coasts recognised as having governance arrangements that “enable it to adequately control the organisation and to continue meeting its objectives”.

Mr Lewis had a 35-year career in senior roles at multinational pharmaceutical businesses before joining the association’s board.

Ms Moore said: “It has been an honour and a pleasure to serve as a board member and chair of Castles and Coasts. The organisation has been transformed during my time on the board, almost doubling in size after the merger. It is committed to providing excellent homes and services to its residents, and has an ambitious development programme.

“I am delighted that Chris has been appointed as my successor and with the full support of the executive team and the board. I know that Chris will steer Castles and Coasts safely on its journey of development and growth and that the organisation will continue to flourish in the years to come.”

Mr Lewis said he is very excited to take the reins later this year: “Fiona has done a terrific job in steering the organisation through a period of immense change, and I absolutely take my hat off to her for all that she has achieved in partnership with our fantastic chief executive, Stephanie Murphy.

“It’s a privilege to take on the chair role, and with that comes a huge responsibility to build on all that has been achieved under Fiona’s stewardship. The organisation is in a very good place, as we approach the mid-point in our corporate strategy, which sets out the vision to 2023.

"However, as we come through these truly unprecedented times there will be challenges and our focus has to be steadfast – on delivering value for our residents and our stakeholders, on growth, on engagement and on sustainability, in the widest sense of the word.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with Castles and Coasts’ talented board and excellent executive team to build on the legacy Fiona leaves.”
