WHG plans £45m development in first scheme as part of Lovell JV #ukhousing

The 21,000-home landlord will develop the £45m scheme through its subsidiary Anthem Homes on a 16.5-acre site in Walsall.

The location, previously owned by steel company Caparo, has stood empty for more than 10 years.

WHG said the partnership with Lovell, the housebuilding arm of construction giant Morgan Sindall, will see them “develop much needed homes across the Midlands”.

It is part of a deal that West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) struck with Lovell Partnerships last month, which will see the house builder deliver 4,000 homes over eight years in the region.

WHG’s chief executive Gary Fulford said: “This innovative partnership will enable us to ramp up our development programme and help provide more good quality and affordable homes for families in Walsall, contributing to an inclusive growth agenda.”

Lovell’s regional managing director Stuart Penn added: “The partnership enables us to pool our respective strengths and puts us in an even better position to deliver the high-quality new homes, available across a range of tenures, which are so urgently needed in the Midlands.”

Walsall Council approved plans for 252 homes on the site a year ago, according to local reports. Construction work is expected to start by next October, with completion set for summer 2024.

It is not clear what the tenure of the homes will be or the amount of affordable housing at this stage.

WHG, formerly know as Walsall Housing Group, appointed Danielle Oum as its chair a year ago. She took over the role from Conservative MP Eddie Hughes, who left his post in June after moving to a role at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
