Ministers urged to ring fence public land

A housing association has called on the government to ring fence some of the public land it has identified for house building for affordable homes.

Home Group issued the call today as the government confirmed its commitment to freeing up public land for house building in its Budget report.

The report states the government has met its target of identifying enough land for 100,000 homes, and that it is committed to bringing forward two sites for pilot land auctions by the end of the year.

Home Group is calling for sites to be guaranteed for affordable housing and made available more quickly. It also wants a ‘build now, pay later’ model that is being offered to house builders to be extended to registered providers.

Mark Henderson, chief executive of Home Group, said: ‘Land price is often the most significant chunk of cost when it comes to developing affordable homes and is often a barrier to the volume of social housing you can build on any one development.

‘By ring-fencing public sector land and selling it at an affordable price for building more affordable homes it would allow social enterprises to build a far greater percentage of social housing on a site.’
