Councils and charities have been expressing concerns about new laws to prevent homelessness which came into force yesterday.
In the news
The Homelessness Reduction Act places new duties on local authorities to help people at risk of becoming homeless.
The Guardian and the Huff Post both report on fears raised by homelessness charities and local authorities about their ability to carry out the new responsibilities.
Homeless charity St Mungo’s has also shared some concerns in a blog post on its website.
Inside Housing assessed whether the Act was sufficiently funded back in December.
Meanwhile, The Guardian also runs a piece on how other, innovative schemes have been helping homeless people across the country.
Channel 5 will broadcast a documentary following a housing officer carrying out her daily duties today – with the Daily Mail alarmed by some of the programme’s revelations.
In other news, Savills research reported by the Telegraph finds that people aged over 50 own three-quarters of the UK’s housing wealth.
Older owner occupiers boast a combined total of £2.8tn in equity.
Elsewhere, the Scottish Housing Regulator has made a series of statutory appointments at troubled Ruchazie Housing Association, per Scottish Housing News.
Also from Scotland, the Scottish Government has announced that its Help to Buy scheme is to be extended for another two years from April 2019, the BBC reports.
