In the news

Families with stable jobs are now at risk of homelessness, the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) has warned. The Guardian reports that nurses, taxi drivers, hospitality staff and council workers have all been helped by the LGO after being made homeless and placed in often poor-quality temporary accommodation.

This report comes as the latest homelessness statistics, published yesterday, revealed that the number of homeless households had increased again compared to the previous year, with 79,150 households in temporary accommodation.

Yesterday there was a memorial service to pay tribute to the 71 victims of the Grenfell Tower fire at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The BBC reported that bereaved families, survivors and rescue workers were joined by the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Bishop of Kensington Graham Tomlin said he hoped the tragedy would represent a “time we learnt a new, better way”.

The Guardian reported that attendees clutched white roses and photographs of lost loved ones.
