Morning Briefing: homelessness bodies join forces to lobby NHS on long-term plan #ukhousing

In the news

Homelessness charities are among 20 organisations calling for the NHS to include more support for rough sleepers in its long-term plan

In a letter to Simon Stevens, chief executive of the NHS, the organisations, including: Shelter, Homeless Link, Centrepoint, Crisis, St Mungo’s, and Thames Reach, called on the NHS to spend more on specialist health interventions for homeless people. It came as the Department for Health and Social Care published a green paper on plans to increase prevention of illness.

Elsewhere, there has been widespread outrage on social media and in the press over footage of a laughing group of men burning an effigy of Grenfell Tower, complete with paper ‘residents’, at a Bonfire Night event. The men’s actions were branded “completely unacceptable” by prime minister Theresa May. Five men have now been arrested, according to reports.

In other Grenfell news, a man who claimed more than £100,000 by pretending that he lived in Grenfell Tower has admitted to fraud, the Metro reports.

Elsewhere, the Grenfell Inquiry continues in London, you can read our latest daily update here.

Universal Credit is rarely out of the news, the latest, reported by Inside Housing, is that the deadline for submitting claims has been extended.
