Morning Briefing: how broad should the Grenfell inquiry be?

In the press

Academics have written to The Guardian to respond to the setting of the scope of the inquiry, which has been criticised by some – including the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – for being too narrow.

Dr David Etherington, an economist at Middlesex University, agreed with Mr Corbyn, but Dr Melanie Henwood argued that it was an “impossible circle to square” and praised the judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick for his attempt. Click here for Inside Housing’s view on the inquiry’s terms of reference.

Meanwhile, the Conservative councillor for Canary Wharf has penned a piece on the New Statesman’s CityMetric website responding to recent claims from the website’s editor, Jonn Elledge, that the Isle of Dogs is full of nimbys.

The councillor, Andrew Wood, points out that the island has a large number of very tall residential buildings, and claims it is denser than Manhattan.

On social media

Last night, Ledbury Estate residents met to discuss the response of the council to the recent fire safety issues on the estate.

What’s on

This afternoon, Lambeth Housing Activists will protest in Brixton over the eviction of a single mother.
