Morning Briefing: reaction to PAC homelessness report #ukhousing

Outrage over PAC report on homelessness #ukhousing

In the news

Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) released a report today which concludes ministers have been “unacceptably complacent” in tackling homelessness.

It has sparked fierce debate on social media, and follows a piece by Dawn Foster in The Guardian asking why more is not being done to solve homelessness when the solutions are known.

The Guardian also ran a story yesterday reporting on the first vending machine for rough sleepers.

Installed in Nottingham, it contains essentials such as food and hygiene products.

In other news, Scotland’s biggest council landlord is considering demolishing all of its 48 tower blocks over the next 20 years, the BBC reports.

North Lanarkshire Council insists its high rises are safe, but wants to replace them with low-rise housing as part of its long-term strategy.

And finally, City AM runs an opinion piece this morning calling for a “housing revolution” in 2018, backing the more “radical” solutions pushed by communities secretary Sajid Javid over those of his bosses Philip Hammond and Theresa May.
