Delays in learning the lessons of the Grenfell Tower fire are putting lives at risk around the country, experts have warned
In the news
A range of experts have told The Independent they fear lives are at risk because of “unacceptable” delays in tightening fire safety regulations.
For those still living in blocks with Grenfell-style cladding, their issues have become financial as well as related to fire safety.
According to The Guardian, a couple living in the New Capital Quay block in Greenwich – which has Grenfell-style cladding – is threatening to sue after they attempted to use a Help to Buy equity loan to buy their flat.
The value of the home fell from £600,000 to £90,000 because of the cladding, but The Guardian reports that the government has failed to confirm that it no longer owns equity in the flat.
With Grenfell again at the forefront of the public’s minds, NME reports on Jay-Z and Beyonce’s show in London on Friday night, at which they paid tribute to the survivors of the fire.
Continuing the theme of fire safety, the BBC marked the 50th anniversary of the Ronan Point disaster with a long piece by Newsnight’s policy editor Chris Cook on the history of buildings of the same design.
The housing crisis, it seems, is also moving back towards centre stage, with Politics Home reporting that 10 prominent Tories will on Wednesday urge the prime minister to adopt a series of new housing policies.
The website does not reveal all the policies, but those it does mention are focused on homeownership.
This is also the focus of estate agent Haart, which is calling on the government to extend its cuts to stamp duty to those seeking to downsize, according to Mortgage Strategy.
Sticking with the house-buying market, The Independent reports on a study finding that it has split in two, with strong activity in the North and “challenging” conditions in the South.
Meanwhile, the water charges scandal is rumbling on, with the BBC reporting that up to 460,000 council and housing association tenants could get a payout thanks to a ruling that Southwark overcharged its tenants for water.
The BBC does not appear to have any new information on the story, but Inside Housing has been following all new developments as they arise, including a challenge to the ruling supported by Barking and Dagenham Council.
