A new £150m fund to help councils and housing associations install affordable heating systems for households hit by fuel poverty has been launched.
National Grid and its company Affordable Warmth Solutions said many of the four million UK households struggling to pay heating bills rely on systems which do not meet their needs or are expensive to run.
The Warm Homes Fund will run over three years and is available to local authorities and housing associations in England, Scotland and Wales.
Housing providers are required to make sure that fuel-poor homes have a minimum energy efficiency rating of Band C by the end of 2030, under a statutory target set by the government in 2014.
Jeremy Nesbitt, managing director of Affordable Warmth Solutions, said: “This is an exciting step forward in the fight against the challenges faced by families and individuals living in poorly heated and insulated homes.
“I’m extremely proud that Affordable Warmth Solutions has been chosen by National Grid to manage the fund and I would encourage local authorities and housing associations to register their interest with us as soon as possible.”
Applicants must register interest in the scheme by 31 July.
