Julie James will be the new minister for housing and local government in Wales, it has been announced.
Welsh Labour politician Ms James is part of the cabinet for newly appointed Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford.
Before being appointed housing minister, Ms James served as leader of the house and chief whip, and is a member of the Welsh Assembly for Swansea West.
Hannah Blythyn, AM for Delyn, has been appointed deputy minister for housing and local government.
Stuart Ropke, chief executive at Community Housing Cymru, which represents all housing associations in Wales, said: “We welcome the appointment of Julie James to the position of minister for housing and local government.
“The elevation of housing to the cabinet table is a timely reminder of the importance of good housing to the future prosperity of Wales.
“The ongoing review of affordable housing presents a huge opportunity for the minister and her deputy, Hannah Blythyn, to create a long-term policy environment which allows housing associations to continue building the homes Wales needs.
“We look forward to meeting with the new ministerial team and working with them towards our vision of a Wales where good housing is a basic right for all.”
