The Greater London Authority (GLA) has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Newlon Housing Trust, in a boost to the housing association’s commitment to deliver 1,265 affordable homes by 2022.
Newlon currently provides 8,000 homes across north and east London, including a 222-home development delivered in partnership with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
The GLA strategic partnerships offer favourable grant rates to associations that are willing to build at least 60% affordable homes on new developments.
Newlon said that of the 1,265 affordable homes it plans to build, 88% will be “truly” affordable.
In November the GLA announced six strategic partnerships with eight housing associations in London, allocating almost £500m of grant to fund around 10,000 affordable homes.
Jules Pipe, deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills, said: “The work of Newlon Housing Trust has already made a huge difference to the capital, delivering genuinely affordable homes that Londoners so desperately need.
“The mayor is using all the resources and funding at his disposal to tackle the housing crisis, including our new support package for small and medium housing associations.
“Our new strategic partnership will help Newlon go even further, providing hundreds of people in north and east London with a home to finally call their own.”
Mike Hinch, chief executive of Newlon Housing Trust, said: “We are very pleased to have been confirmed as one of the GLA’s strategic partners.
“The additional funding and flexibility will enable us to deliver over 1,000 new affordable homes for people in housing need across north and east London.”
