An arm’s-length management organisation (ALMO) is planning to take on responsibility for repairing its parent council’s corporate properties as it expands its in-house operation.
Nottingham City Homes, the ALMO responsible for 27,000 council homes in the city, took on responsibility for day-to-day repairs to council properties in 2014.
Since last year it has also used its 350-strong team of maintenance staff to directly build houses in Nottingham rather than contracting out to a developer.
Steve Hale, director of property services at Nottingham City Homes, said the plan is to grow this team to 500 staff and give it more responsibility for planned improvement works as well as repairs.
It will also offer repairs services to the council for its offices and corporate properties and may bid for work from other associations in the city, he said.
“Doing this brings employment into the city and keeps money in Nottingham. We’ve worked out that every pound spent through the direct labour operation results in £1.70 being spent in Nottingham, but if you spend with a national contractor, that goes down to £1.30,” he said.
