“I have every confidence that they will continue to deliver great things for the city.

“It has been an honour to have served the citizens of Birmingham and work with four different leaders and four chief executives.

“I am now looking forward to exploring the next chapter in my career.”

Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “Waheed has led the way in the transformation of Birmingham over the past decade, and the large number of major development projects either under way or in the pipeline are testament to his hard work and vision for the city.

“Waheed is passionate about Birmingham and he has certainly left a lasting mark on the city of his birth.

“He has built a strong team and, thanks to his efforts, we are building new homes, attracting record investment and creating jobs and opportunities for the people of Birmingham.”

Dawn Baxendale, chief executive of the council, who is also leaving Birmingham to head Christchurch City Council in New Zealand, said: “Waheed has helped to transform the Birmingham skyline, attracting significant investment to the city.

“I would like to thank him for his commitment and wish him every success in the future.”
