Britain could end homelessness within 10 years, says Crisis #ukhousing

New @crisis_uk report outlines strategy for ending homelessness in 10 years #ukhousing

In a report published today titled Everybody in: how to end homelessness in Great Britain, the homelessness charity lays out a plan which it claims incorporates the “exact government policies” needed to end homelessness permanently.

The strategy includes building 100,500 social homes a year for the next 15 years across England, Scotland and Wales.

And it recommends a national roll-out of Housing First to help more than 18,000 people into homes with specialised support.

Crisis estimates there are currently 236,000 homeless people in Britain, based on a study by Heriot-Watt University.

Jon Sparkes, chief executive of Crisis, said: “We must not become a society that simply accepts homelessness as ‘a sad fact of life’, because the good news is that we know it doesn’t have to be this way.

“It’s been inspiring to see the recent surge in public support and political will to tackle homelessness, including strong commitments from all three governments.

“Now is the time to build on those commitments. With the right measures in place, we can do what it takes to end homelessness and make sure that no one in Britain has to face it again.”

The charity is calling on all political parties to commit to ending homelessness and for governments to introduce an action plan to end homelessness within 10 years.

Other measures recommended by the report include better rights and longer tenancies for renters and housing benefit reforms.

It also says other public bodies like hospitals, prisons and the care system should be legally required to help prevent people leaving their care from becoming homeless.

Research by PwC found the policies would cost £9.9bn over the next decade and deliver benefits worth £26.4bn through savings in councils’ homelessness services, temporary accommodation, the NHS and the criminal justice system.
