A Midlands housing association has signed a deal to deliver the first phase of affordable housing at the UK’s largest self-build and custom-build development.
Bromford has been selected as a partner by Cherwell District Council to take on 59 homes for affordable rent and shared ownership at the Graven Hill site in 2018/19.
The development in Bicester, Oxfordshire has planning consent for up to 1,900 homes with 30% affordable.
It will be run by Graven Hill Village Development Company, which is owned by Cherwell District Council.
In September, housing minister Alok Sharma opened the UK’s first ‘plot shop’ near the site, which will sell plots of land to people wishing to build their own home at Graven Hill.
The 462-acre former Ministry of Defence site is being delivered in phases over 10 years and will include an extra care scheme; a primary school; and business, retail and leisure facilities.
Philippa Jones, chief executive of 28,000-home landlord Bromford, said: “We’re really excited to be working with Graven Hill on what is a truly pioneering development for Britain’s housebuilding sector and one which will act as a trailblazer for a new way of delivering customised homes and empowering communities.”
It will provide 27 homes for affordable rent at the scheme, with another 32 for shared ownership.
Karen Curtin, managing director of Graven Hill Village Development Company, said: “We are delighted to welcome Bromford as a key partner in this development.
“With 30% of the site providing affordable homes, we are confident that we have the same shared vision that will bring forth a diverse community at Graven Hill and we look forward to welcoming the first new residents in spring 2018.”
