New rules for councils on registers of underused land for new homes have come into force, housing minister Gavin Barwell confirmed today.
Local authorities will now be required to produce up-to-date, publicly available registers of brownfield sites that can be used for housing.
The aim is for house builders to use these registers to identify sites suitable for building more quickly and thus deliver more homes.
Mr Barwell said: “These new registers will give local authorities and developers the tools to do this.”
Brownfield registers were first piloted in councils around the country just over a year ago. In January 2016, the London Land Commission, a database for London’s surplus public land, was launched.
