Robert Appleyard, a former chair of giant housing association L&Q, has passed away.
Mr Appleyard died last week following a short illness.
He was chair of L&Q, which now owns more than 90,000 homes across London and the South East, from 1998 until he retired in 2006.
During his tenure as head of the board, L&Q went through four mergers, adding 17,000 homes to its stock.
Mr Appleyard first joined L&Q’s board in 1988 and was chair of its low-cost home ownership subsidiary between 1992 and 1998.
David Montague, chief executive of L&Q, said: “Bob embodied the values of L&Q. He was professional, business-like and at ease with the big numbers and risks, but also empathetic, easy to get on with, passionate, people-focused and caring.
“Bob was the first L&Q chair that I had the pleasure of working with. He showed me what good governance looked like and what a good relationship between chair and [chief executive] looked like. And he steered the organisation through a period of unprecedented growth and change.
“We have a lot to thank Bob for. We will miss him, but his memory will live on in the mission of L&Q.”
Aubrey Adams, chair of L&Q, said: “Bob played a crucial role in making L&Q the organisation it is today. His name will forever live on in our history, and his legacy will be carried into our future.”
