The former long-standing chief executive of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has died.
Paddy McIntyre passed away recently, eight years after retiring from a 40-year career in the housing sector.
After starting collecting rents for then-Northern Ireland Housing Trust, he joined NIHE in 1974, working his way up to chief executive of the body 25 years later.
Mr McIntyre remained as chief executive for 11 years to his retirement in 2010. He had a budget of more than £700 million and a headcount of 3,000 people to manage, and was awarded an OBE for services to housing.
Clark Bailie, current chief executive of the NIHE, said: “Paddy will be recognised as a central figure in the success of the [NI] Housing Executive and in helping improve lives of so many people. Paddy worked in the Housing Executive for over 40 years, often in very challenging times.
“He was a leader in delivering social change through better housing and providing services to all the people and communities which we serve. He will be remembered fondly not only by his colleagues in the Housing Executive but also by all the other organisations he worked with over the years.”
Nicola McCrudden, director of the Chartered Institute of Housing in Ireland and Northern Ireland, said: “Paddy was dedicated to improving lives through housing, both in terms of building homes and communities.
“During his lengthy career he spearheaded many policies and strategies that positively changed the lives of thousands of individuals and families across Northern Ireland. A highly respected housing professional, he will be truly missed by his colleagues in housing and the wider community sector.”
