Mr Cowans, who left Places for People in March after 24 years, has taken the non-executive role at Sussex-based Human Nature (Places).

The firm, which describes itself as a “sustainable developer”, was co-founded in 2015 by Michael Manolson and Jonathan Smales. Both were directors and international trustees at Greenpeace in the 1980s.

Mr Cowans will share the role of chair with Mr Manolson.

It comes as Human Nature is gearing up to submit a planning application for its first major development as a landowner: a 700-home scheme in Lewes, East Sussex.

Human Nature (Places) was previously known as Beyond Green Living, a sustainability consultancy that advised on projects such as the 2012 London Olympics, Earl’s Court and Harlow North.

Mr Cowans has accumulated a number of non-executive roles this year.

In March, he was appointed as a strategic advisor to private equity giant Regis Group, which helped launched for-profit provider Sage Homes with Blackstone in 2017.

Mr Cowans is also chair of property tech firm Wondrwall Group, having been appointed in February.
