Glasgow homelessness alliance appoints first ever director #UKhousing

The Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness, which is a city-wide initiative to tackle rough sleeping, announced today that Mr Kelvin would join in May to become its first ever director.

The Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness is the first initiative of its kind in Scotland and sees 10 organisations come together, on behalf of Glasgow City Council, to use their expertise and knowledge to create a more coherent and co-ordinated approach to tackling homelessness across the city.

The 10 organisations are from across the health and social care sector and comprise: Aspire, CrossReach, Glasgow Homelessness Involvement and Feedback Team (GHIFT), Glasgow City Council, Homeless Network Scotland, Sacro, The Mungo Foundation, The Salvation Army, Wheatley Care and Ypeople.

Among the aims of the group is to end rough sleeping in the city, while it is also looking to reduce the amount of time people spend in temporary accommodation. Mr Kelvin joins the group from Disability Snowsport where he has been chief executive since 2018. He was also previously a director at Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland, a group of 800 members that worked together to improve the long-term conditions for disabled people.

The Alliance was first launched in February 2020 as part of a new approach by the council to try and tackle the city’s well-documented homelessness problem. It will be given £187m for its work.

Its launch came after an inquiry from the Scottish Housing Regulator in December 2019 was launched looking into the council’s homelessness services.

David Pentland, who is part of the Alliance leadership team, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mark to the Alliance team. We were impressed by Mark’s passion for the Alliance and his commitment to working alongside Glasgow’s citizens to tackle homelessness. We’re looking forward to seeing him advance our plans.”

Mr Kelvin said: “I am really excited about the work of the Alliance and the opportunity to shape this new role.

“Glasgow is a proud city and by working together to create a movement for change we can tackle the challenges that homelessness presents and achieve the vision of the Alliance – to end homelessness in Glasgow by 2030.”
