Home Group has seen plans for a new £175m garden village in Durham secure planning permission.
The housing association has partnered with Gateshead-based developer and contractor Tolent for the South Seaham Garden Village scheme, which will see a total of 1,500 homes built, including 750 affordable homes.
Durham County Council gave the scheme planning permission on Tuesday, paving the way for construction to start next year with the first homes expected to be made available in early 2020.
A total of 750 homes in the village will be built for the private sector, with the money being used to subsidise Home Group’s affordable homes and the construction of a secondary school, village centre and sports facility.
The scheme will also enlist the help of the National Innovation Centre for Ageing and the University of Northumbria School of Nursing with the design of the houses.
The development is expected to last 10 years and create 500 construction jobs.
