Model village wins next stage of planning battle
An energy-efficient community has moved a step closer as the second phase is given planning permission.
York Council has agreed the plans for 123 new family homes on the Derwenthorpe development just outside the city.
The Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust project has been more than 10 years in the planning after delays and attempts to halt it.
Derwenthorpe will eventually provide 540 family homes in total and is an attempt to replicate the success of Victorian philanthropist Joseph Rowntree’s ‘garden village’.
Nigel Ingram, director of development and asset management at JRHT, said: ‘There is a chronic shortage in supply of family homes in the city and we are pleased that, despite numerous delays, we can start to meet that need. We look forward to dozens of families benefitting from the sustainable lifestyle that Derwenthorpe has to offer.’
Interest in the homes in phase one, which comprises 64 properties, is increasing – 17 have already sold outright, and half of the shared ownership homes are ‘under offer’.
Approval of phase two also means the procurement process to build the next tranche of houses can begin imminently. Of the 540 homes to be built, 135 will be for rent and 81 for shared ownership.
