Morning Briefing: research shows evictions have soared

In the news

Homelessness and evictions are the grim themes dominating the housing headlines this morning.

The Guardian is reporting research which shows more than 40,000 tenants in England were evicted in 2015, up a third since 2003 and the highest level ever recorded.

So-called ‘no-fault’ evictions by private landlords drove the rise, with more than 80% of the extra evictions occurring under a Section 21 notice, which gives a tenant two months to leave.

Meanwhile, separate but clearly connected numbers from the Local Government Association show councils are currently providing temporary housing for 120,540 children with their families, which is a net increase of 32,650 (37%) since the second quarter of 2014, an average of 906 extra children every month – an entire secondary school’s worth each month.

In Grenfell Tower related updates, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea says former residents of the tower will be able to choose a residence in newly built permanent housing, with 40 of 168 households allocated a spot so far, according to local media.

The council says residents will not be forced into accepting an offer of social housing and will only move into a permanent home if they are happy to do so.
