Grenfell conman admits fraud, London council builds social housing with features for ultra-Orthodox Jewish families and Brighton seeks to suspend housing policies
In the news
The BBC and The Guardian report that a serial conman has admitted fraud after he lied about having family who died in the Grenfell Tower fire.
Anh Nhu Nguyen admitted that he pretended his son and wife had died in the tower block blaze in an attempt to pocket £12,500 set aside for the victims.
Nguyen was given a hotel room, clothing, food, electrical items and money. He was discovered to be a fake when he gave several different flat numbers, some of which did not exist and one where a real victim lived.
Hackney Council will build social housing with features suited to ultra-Orthodox Jewish families, The Guardian reports. The new homes will include lifts which do not require manual operation on Shabbat, the Jewish sabbath; open balconies to accommodate temporary enclosures during the religious holiday of Sukkot, and separate kitchens which can be easily adapted to kosher requirements.
Brighton and Hove Council will ask the government if the Right to Buy can be suspended in the area, as well as greater borrowing limits and the right to introduce rent controls, after a heated vote at a council meeting last night.
