Morning Briefing: no “spring bounce” for housing market #ukhousing

All eyes are on the housing market as Brexit uncertainty among buyers continues to limit transactions. This morning, figures from property website Rightmove are widely covered, having been circulated by the Press Association, which say that house prices are 0.8% lower year-on-year at £302,002.

They are up 0.4% month-on-month, but this is the lowest monthly rise at this time of year since 2011, with the usual “spring bounce” delayed by Brexit.

But the same figures note that prices are actually rising in Scotland with a 3.1% rise month-on-month, the largest of any region or country in the UK.

It comes as we report Sir Edward Lister, chair of Homes England, saying that investors should “ignore Brexit” and concentrate on the massive demand for homes in the UK, which isn’t going anywhere.

The BBC reports on charity figures showing the scaling back of emergency crisis funds called local welfare assistance schemes, with at least 20 councils not offering the payments and the overall pot stripped down to £46m from £172m since 2013.

This funding is distinct from Discretionary Housing Payments, which are used to support those in housing crisis.

Brighton’s The Argus covers a discussion of tackling the housing crisis by community groups in the city.

In Middlesbrough, Teeside Live has a long read about a range of issues in the TS1 postcode area of the city, including some relating to housing.

In Flintshire, Wales, empty supported housing is costing the council £250,000 in lost rent, the BBC reports.
