Morning Briefing: Notting Hill and Genesis shareholders vote through merger #ukhousing

Housing association shareholders vote through merger amid protests #ukhousing

In the news

Notting Hill Housing and Genesis will merge to form a 64,000-home landlord after shareholders of the two housing associations gave their consent at key meetings last night. Protesters gathered outside the north London offices of the two organisations to voice concerns about the partnership. Some tenants have warned the move would lead to “social cleansing”. Inside Housing understands shareholders voted “overwhelmingly” in favour of the merger, which required a two-thirds majority.

Meanwhile, a Scottish council is in talks with the Treasury over its £200m housing budget debt, the Press and Journal reports. Highland Council is looking for ways to reduce the annual £20m burden of its loan costs.

In other news, an aristocrat has received planning permission to build 2,350 homes in a Cotswold town, despite the fact that just 70 will be for social rent, according to the BBC. Cotswold District Council gave Lord Bathurst the go-ahead for the huge development on the edge of Cirencester last night.
