Morning Briefing: up to one in 25 people homeless in some areas #ukhousing

In the news

Homelessness charity Shelter claims that more than 268,000 people across the country are homeless – though it calls this figure a “conservative estimate”, the BBC reports this morning.

Shelter has carried out an extensive homelessness survey, looking into the areas where homelessness is most severe. London accounts for 31 of the 50 homelessness hotspots.

MPs debated the state of temporary accommodation in parliament yesterday, with the Huffington Post reporting, as well as Inside Housing.

In other news, The Independent has interviewed Elizabeth Campbell, leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council.

Elsewhere, questions have been asked about the handling of allegations against former Welsh minister with responsibility for housing Carl Sargeant, who is believed to have taken his own life yesterday.

Labour members of the Welsh Assembly have spoken to the BBC about their “unease” surrounding how Mr Sargeant was sacked from his cabinet role and suspended from the party following undisclosed claims about his personal conduct.

On social media

Tributes to Mr Sargeant and condolences to his family continued to pour in on social media yesterday.
