NIHE announces regional investment plan

It expects to invest £30.5m in the district during 2017/18 through its Housing Investment Plan.

This includes grant aid to housing associations for development, maintenance and upgrade work to its own stock and spending through the Supporting People budget.

The amount channelled into new build is not yet known as the NIHE’s Social Housing Development Programme costs for 2017/18 have not been finalised.

Last year, the housing authority invested a total of £63.54m in Derry and Strabane.

Speaking before Derry City and Strabane District Council this week, Clark Bailie, chief executive of the NIHE, said: “Lots of work needs to be done to meet housing need, improve housing stock and provide support for the most vulnerable in our community. We will continue to play our part to ensure this work is delivered efficiently and effectively.”

More than half – £15.95m – of the 85,000-home landlord’s Derry and Strabane spending will be on maintenance of its stock, with a further £3.38m earmarked for capital improvements.

Outside maintenance work will be carried out on 1,350 homes and revenue replacements to 565 homes. New heating systems will be installed in 268 homes and double glazing on 165.

In 2016/17, the NIHE spent £85.3m on maintenance work in 25,100 homes.
