Liverpool City Council has agreed to pay £750,000 to refurbish private homes that had previously been earmarked for demolition #ukhousing

The Welsh Streets Home Improvement Grant is targeted at homes which were originally set to be demolished under the government’s Housing Renewal Initiative.

However, it was scrapped in 2010 and housing association Plus Dane has been refurbishing the homes it owns in the area.

It is currently refurbishing homes in Toxteth as part of a £17.4m programme which has already improved 200 properties.

Plus Dane also plans to refurbish 125 homes owned by the council.

Liverpool City Council’s grant will go to homeowners on four streets in order to bring the conditions of their homes in line with Plus Dane’s social housing.

Lynnie Hinnigan, deputy mayor of Liverpool and cabinet member for housing, said: “The regeneration of the Welsh Streets community is one of the city’s great success stories of the past decade and required a huge amount of partnership working to transform a collapsed idea into an award-winning scheme.

“The people living in the Welsh Streets have been on a huge roller-coaster ride from bordering on seeing their homes demolished and being rehoused to seeing their Victorian homes being spectacularly re-engineered to 21st century standards.”
